Damn you, small town movie theaters!

I was planning on going to see Joss Whedon's "Much Ado About Nothing" for my birthday, but the closest theater it is playing in is two hours away, and I don't own a car. Hence, a poll:

It's perfectly reasonable to spend $68 on trainfare, spend 2 hours each way on the train and then walk three miles in each direction to see this movie, right?

I can't think of a better way to spend your birthday
You could always figure out the bus routes or take a cab to skip the 6 mile walk
You are a CRAZY person. CRAZY
You might as well spend $20 more and go to San Francisco for your birthday, where you could see the movie and do fun SF things

The movie is delightful! I think going to see it in SF would make a delightful way to spend your bday. Have a good one!

The last option, definitely. If you already intend to spend so much you might as well go all out.

Also, have you considered investing in a bicycle? If you're able to, y'know, ride one, then you should definitely consider it.

I myself am going bike shopping because the transportation fares in this city are ridiculous. I live in NYC and they just keep on hiking up the prices ($2.50/ride, $2.75 for a single ride. That's $5 just to get to school and back every single day, JFC). /END RANT.

Anyway, do you usually just walk everywhere, or?

I walk or I take the bus. I live in a very small town. Also, a bike wouldn't help in Sacramento, because I can't take it on the train. (Well, you can take it on the train proper, but the "train" to Sacramento is actually a bus. And it would probably take at least 4 hours for me to bike to Sacramento).

Okay, so this made me curious about how you would even get to Sacramento on a bike (since you can't take the freeway) and I did a little googling. The suggested bike route is about 120 miles on roads that, for most of the way, have no services so you have to carry your own food and water. The internet also tells me that beginning cyclists probably ride at 15mph or less, so it would be at least 8 hours each way to bike there. My vote would definitely go to some other option over that!

Hee! I think 120 miles is a little much for someone who really only bikes about 1.5 miles in the gym 3 days a week or so.

It depends how ambitious I am--I did finally get an invitation for that going away party on my birthday proper--but I may make a day trip to SF sometime next week on the train, because $68 to Sac (really Davis since they won't let you buy a "train" ticket unless you are actually on the train partway, even though I wouldn't actually take the Davis leg) seems a little ridic to me. Besides, in SF I could do my other favorite thing, which is take a ferry somewhere just for the boat ride.

I think it sounds like an awesome birthday treat - all the reviews have been glowing!

Yes, everyone I know who has seen it has loved it.

Happy Birthday!

I did want to see Much Ado About Nothing but, hm, am having trouble finding someone in my inner circle here. If/when you do make it down, wanna see it together?

I could have sworn I replied to this! I ended up not going this week, but when I get back from my trip to Chicago I am probably coming to SF the weekend of July 20 or 27, so if you haven't seen it by then we should definitely do that.

Ah, that’s too bad. This week has been a shiny happy week in SF, complete with sunshine (gasp!) since Wednesday.

Actually, I’d like to take a day trip up to Sacramento if you wanna meet halfway. I’d have to figure out transportation since I’d like to take a bus or train but we’ll see. Just let me know when.
