Beauty and the Beast

So I liked every single thing about this show except what is undoubtedly going to be the central romance.

I thought KK was fabulous, and I loved that she's getting to play a smart, bantery character. I also loved that her partner was a woman and that they work so well together. I thought the opening scene did a tremendous job establishing her backstory (and hurray that her mom was actually Asian--Smallville, I'm still side-eyeing you for that), and in the 2 minutes of screentime her mom got I started liking her enough that I was really sad that she died. I hope it turns out she was investigating the soldier serum so we'll get to see her in flashbacks or something.

I definitely like the idea that Catherine is now caught up in investigating a larger conspiracy (and wow, I hope they let her kick ass every week; I was very impressed with that fight scene), and while the case they were investigating wasn't particularly gripping, I did enjoy the investigation. The only thing I didn't really like was Vincent. Or rather, I like him kind of in the abstract (though you would think a doctor would at least investigate before allowing himself to be experimented on medically!!), but I'm not really into her relationship with him. I am fine with her being intrigued by him and relieved to discover she's not crazy, but I don't actually like him, which I can see may turn out to be a problem, given that their relationship is going to be the center of the show.

We'll see, I guess. Maybe I will grow to like him.

In the ads I've seen he looks like a hot TV actor with one tiny scar on his cheek, not a beast that has to hide in a sewer, so I'm a little confused about the premise.

One of the things that I believe everyone gets wrong about the Linda Hamilton/Ron Perlman series is which one of them is the beast. After all, the story is that Beauty's love changes the Beast, but Vincent doesn't change at all.

That makes Catherine the beast. She was a spoiled rich girl who worked for her Daddy's law firm, but falling in love with Vincent (and seeing his world) changed her for the better. After she recovered from the attack that she suffered in the pilot, she gave up her high-paying job and became an assistant district attorney.

Hmm... That makes me slightly more skeptical about this version. If they're both already on the side of good, who's going to change?

Interesting. I never actually saw the original series, but that's clearly not the setup for this version.

I have never seen the original show, though it's been in my Netflix queue for a while (mainly because of the Wendy Pini connection).

Well, he's actually a little Hulk-like (or, I suppose, werewolf-like, but I think Hulk is more appropriate because he was injected with some sort of superserum gone wrong) in that when his adrenaline is pumping he transforms physically, at least somewhat, and looks a lot more scary and I think loses control of his actions? That's implied, anyway.

I'm expecting the Avengers fusions to pop up any moment now.

Ah, then that makes sense. Can he be both the beauty and the beast himself? ;)

Okay, this show wasn't even on my radar, but I watched it this morning so I could read your post. I agree with you - I liked everything about it except the scenes between Catherine and Vincent, which seemed to drag on unnecessarily.

This is another show I had to watch because of the Smallville connection, and I liked it enough that I will probably watch a few more episodes to see if I get drawn into the Catherine/Vincent stuff or not. (Though I think what I really want already is Catherine/her partner!)

Too bad it's too late for Yuletide.

You pretty well summed up all my feelings about the show!
