Like Luggage of Some Departed Traveller by britomart_is (Sam/Jess, Sam/Dean, Dean/Jess, Sam/Dean/Jess)
This is my favorite story so far, and is unlikely to be supplanted, since the only thing I like better than a good Sam/Jess story is a Sam/Jess/Dean threesome. In this AU, the apocalypse comes a year after Sam and Jess have married, and Dean, who hasn't spoken to Sam in five years, comes out to California to save them. They have to navigate the apocalypse together--and sometimes apart. A really fantastic postapocalyptic tale, and an excellent and very realistic tale of how Sam and Jess become Sam, Jess and Dean.

Seek to Know No More by chiiyo86(Jared/Jensen)
A compelling AU set in a world where some people have paranormal powers--Jensen, for example, is a "transparent," meaning people generally don't see him and forget his existence; Jared can read emotions through touch. Jensen is a PI, and Jared is a consultant for the police. They have a couple one-night stands but are soon drawn together in a murder investigation when other paranormal people seem to be the targets. Excellent worldbuilding and a very good mystery plot make this an enjoyable read. I also thought Jensen's power was fascinating and rather heartbreaking, because he can't control it, so even the people he loves often forget he exists.

An Uncommon Season by t_fic (Jensen/JDM).
I really enjoyed this Regency AU in which Jensen's family is bankrupt due to debt, so he has to marry an heiress to keep them from going under. During his search, he encounters Jeffrey Morgan, a man with a reputation and a bit of a mysterious past. The first part of the story doesn't focus too much on the romance, but on establishing the characters and the setting (both of which are terrific; I really loved the roles played by Sophia Bush, Daneel Harris, Jared and Misha in this) and setting up the obstacles to the romance, which is really all in the last third of the story. I think one of the things I liked most about this is that the relationship seemed realistic to the period without turning into a total angstfest.

Don't Hide our Light by laisserais (Jared/Jensen). I have to be in the right emotional place to read stories with heavy homophobia, which the author's note led me to believe this would be, so I was uncertain about reading this until I read a couple reviews of it. It's true that part of the main conflict in this story is Jensen coming to terms with messages about masculinity he received from a conservative Christian upbringing, but it is by no means an angstfest. It's more about his growing admiration for Jared's willingness to be himself despite social costs, and how his friendship with Jared over the years ends up transforming him. Bonus good friendship stuff with Misha and JDM.

Sam and Dean Winchester, Unicorn Hunters by aggybird (Sam/Dean) I thought perhaps this would be too cracky, but I think it was just cracky enough: after the apocalypse is averted, Sam and Dean get recruited by the Queen of all the Fairies Queen of the Summer Court to fight the unicorn menace. For the first part of the story, I confess I couldn't see why the fairies wanted Sam and Dean if it wasn't for comic relief, but the way they actually defeated the unicorns made me howl with laughter. Also this has a couple of good OCs.

Hell House by narukyu (Sam/Gabriel).
I read this because I am a complete sucker for Gabriel stories, though he doesn't actually show up until more than halfway through the story. This is a creepy and compelling AU in which15-year-old Sam wakes up at an eerie Catholic school, and while at first he is suspicious he becomes convinced that his Dad sent him there as a punishment, so he doesn't try to escape. The school is full of special children--Andy, Ava, Jake, Lily, Ansem and others--and they are being taught mainly to avoid evil by a bunch of sadistic nuns and priests. Sam becomes intrigued by the mystery surrounding the school and tries to investigate, eventually with the help of Gabriel. Gabriel was mainly (though not entirely) in Trickster mode in this story, and his brief relationship with Sam is quite believable (Sam is 18 by that time, for those who care about underage issues). The story ends in a mostly-finished place, though it is clearly setting things up for a sequel.

As though nothing could fall by kellifer_fic (Jared/Jensen). An enjoyable superhero AU that I think is a little modelled after the Sky High universe (?) Jared is a shapeshifting super, and Jensen is assigned to be his sidekick. Jensen won't reveal his power, though, and in the meantime an archvillain known as The Fisher is starting to threaten the city again. I enjoyed the meta commentary on being a superhero in this, and the fact that the lesser-known superheros get to save the day.

I wondered whether the Unicorn Hunters would be a good read--I'll check it out!

Yeah, from the description it could have gone either way, but I liked it.
