Mid-week SPN recs

A few stories from SPN bigbang I really liked, and a few I liked but had mixed feelings about. If you only like recs that contain no criticism of stories, please don't click on the link.

Similarly, authors, if you got here by vanity googling yourself, you might want to click the back button, because some of these reviews are critical.

Stories I really liked

By All Means, Rome (Jared/Jensen) by deirdre_c. Shockingly, I've never seen Roman Holiday, so I don't know how closely this adheres to the original, but I thought this story was thoroughly charming. Jared is a broke journalist living in Rome who saves reclusive Hollywood star Jensen Ackles from a mugging. Convinced he's going to get the story that will make his career, he takes Jensen on a day's adventure through Rome, and then has to decide whether it's worth risking his newfound relationship with Jensen for fame and fortune.

Redemption (Jared/Jensen) by ancastar. Technically this is slave fic, though it's consensual slavery more on par with arranged marriage than hardcore slavery. Jensen is a rich executive with a bad relationship history, so he's looking for something uncomplicated; Jared needed a large sum of money because of family troubles. The story does a good job of exploring some of the interpersonal issues that arise when an intimate relationship is based on a business contract. It also has a really nice slow build of Jared and Jensen's relationship, some interesting worldbuilding (it's set sometime vaguely in the future), and some good suspense at the end as Jared's family troubles impinge on his new relationship.

And the Greatest of these is Love (Jared/Jensen) by beckaandzac. Jensen and Jared are teenagers who belong to a strict Christian church that teaches being gay is a sin; they have to reconcile that with their growing feelings for each other. This story is a lot more respectful of Jensen's faith (we mostly see his POV) than most stories of this type, and the love story is sweet. There are also a lot of cute Sunday school scenes with (I believe?) the Jonas brothers.

Real Life, Good for you (Jared/Jensen) by nerdwegian. A sweet college AU in which for a change Jared is the painfully shy, geeky one. Maybe a little too much wallowing in Jared's self-doubt, but otherwise I enjoyed this.

Stories I generally liked but had mixed feelings about

The True Story of the New World (Sam/Dean) by chasingtides. If you're looking for angsty Sam/Dean futurefic (with a strong emphasis on Dean angst), this is a story you'll enjoy. At it's heart, it's the classic Sam-Dean misunderstanding fic: Sam is convinced that his desires for Dean will make Dean hate him, so he leaves; Dean is convinced that he should let Sam go so he can have a normal life, even though he's pining for him the whole time. I will say, though, that the premise for the misunderstanding that makes them separate seems mind-boggling to me: how the hell could Sam write a series of best-selling novels about his incestuous desires for Dean and expect Dean never to read them? However, it was quite a well-written angst-athon, so if you're looking to wallow in Dean's self-martyrdom for a while, and you're ok with a bittersweet ending, you'll probably like this. Unless you have an extra-wide screen, though, I'd recommend this widget, since the formatting is too wide for ordinary screens: http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/

Your Taste is Like the Wind on My Tongue (Jared/Jensen/Danneel) by silver_slashes. This story could have benefited from a better beta, but I read to the end anyway, because I totally loved the cheestastic supernatural premise (it's a world where vampires ally themselves with Givers, who are immortal so can have their blood sucked as much as necessary, but one Giver decides she hates the vampire she's been assigned to and is on the run from the Council who does the arragned marriages) and I loved the fact that it blended soulmates with a threesome, which quite unusual. I knew going in that it wasn't going to be a stellar reading experience (a lot of spelling/grammar issues and overwritten prose), but the plot was pretty fun, the sex was hot, and the villains were VERY mustache-twirly. A little too much soul-bonding angst in the second part of the story, but if you're looking for cheesy threesome fic, or just stories in general with an awesome Danneel, you may like this.

Grimoire (Jared/Jensen) by yasmine32068. I really loved the first half of this story, which focuses on Jared, psychic bookstore owner in New Orleans, but I felt that once he meets Federal Marshall Jensen and tries to figure out who's trying to kill him, the pacing got weird and there was a little too much "pile every possible supernatural cliche into this story" going on (vampires, werewolves, AND fae? Is that really necessary?) But I thought parts of this were really enjoyable, like Jared's relationship with his grandmother or his encounter with Brownies, and it's got Tom Welling running around as a helpful naked ghost, as well as several cameos from the Leverage cast, so that may be incentive for some.

He Ain't Heavy, Mister (Sam/Dean) by space_raider182. I really liked the premise of this fic: Sam and Dean were raised apart, and Dean doesn't even know that Sam exists. He's the one to quit hunting when he's 18, and he's established a solid life with Cassie and is going to marry her, until he discovers he has a brother he never knew. This story does an excellent job of reversing Sam and Dean's positions vis-a-vis John, and it's an interesting retelling of season 1. I personally would have liked to know why Sam is supposed to be especially naive and socially challenged in this fic (it's heavily implied he has some kind of disability, but it's never explained), and for whatever reason the Wincest in this story didn't really work for me, but YMMV.
