Before I get to the controversy, did everybody see this announcement that scribblinlenore's in the hospital? Someone is going to be setting up a comm for well wishes; I'll link when I have more info.

So everybody's talking about migration again, after the permanent suspension of some HP fan artists for underage art. elke_tanzer has a good roundup of links here and you can see comments from one of the suspended artists at their GJ sites here.

A lot of folks in HP fandom are talking about moving to another service in solidarity, or because they think this is just the first wave of direct attacks on fans. synecdochic offers another perspective, and elynross expands on the legal issues a bit here. At this point I tend to agree that moving to another provider is a short-term solution at best, because if the real problem is witchhunts against anyone who might be "endangering children online," IJ and GJ are likely to be just as vulnerable. And many people have raised the issue that migration would mean the loss of people's networks, though florahart is trying to strategize a more organized way to migrate that might solve some of those problems. Other folks are talking about setting up a fannish version of LJ , run by fans so it's not as subject to outside pressures. Actually several other people have had that idea, so I hope they are talking to each other about it. If you're interested, there's a community to talk about this here.

For those who are considering migrating, here's a place where you can leave a forwarding address so people can find you in the future: http://directorium.org/Home. A couple other suggestions for helping people keep track of you when you move can be found here. There are a lot of good links for how to back up your LJ here. ETA: A great tutorial for doing that is available here: http://rahalia-cat.livejournal.com/1431545.html. Some folks are recommending that if you have content that might cause you to get banned (drawings, manips, or even fic of underage sex) and you mod a community, at the very least you make sure you have a comod in the event that you get suspended.

As always, I am norwich36 on GJ and IJ too.

You know what? I gotta be honest, I'm not going a damn place. Keep in mind though, I'm saying this as someone who really isn't that invested in fandom. Like I enjoy it, but I don't really feel moral outrage unless someone starts throwing around slurs.

But leaving LJ? I'm kinda meh on the whole thing.

Well, I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way. If it's not your fandom (or your fandom friends) being targeted, or you're not really invested in fandom, I certainly understand why you wouldn't want to move.

Me too.

Also: JournalFen already exists. Do these people not know, or do they have something against JournalFen? (I know there have been some issues with them. Amongst others, I think that's where FandomWank lives now.)

The main objections to JournalFen that I've heard:

1. The robustness of their servers (that is, their complete LACK of robustness. They can't even handle fandom wank's traffic--they are always going down). And apparently lots of people have volunteered $$, fixit help etc. to the admins over the past couple years but no changes have been made. In many cases, links to basic services don't work, etc. [Note: this is all hearsay--I have no knowledge whether all this is true or not, these are just the complaints I've heard].

2. The over 18 policy. Not a problem for me--I think it solves problems, really--but a big problem for a lot of folks who don't want the main fan journal to be exclusionary.

3. The fact that their version of the lj opensource code is antique and doesn't support a lot of features people want like openID and tagging.

4. The fandom wank issue. Lots of people still have problems with it and associate JF completely with it, since it was "created to host fandom wank." [Again, I'm not sure to what extent this is true--it's just a complaint I've heard.]

Oh, having said all that I feel I should say I just personally got a JF account--and if objections 1-3 turned out to be incorrect or fixable, I'd be happy to stay there, because it already has an infrastructure.

I agree, too, that migrating elsewhere may not be the best solution in the long run. Makes it so much harder to keep track of one another. I'd rather see fandom show a strong, united front to Six Apart/LJ. But that's just me.

I'm not sure LJ is going to give into fan pressure on this one, though, because they are (probably justly) afraid of the legal repercussions, as synecdochic's post linked above makes clear. I don't see them putting their business in danger for the defense of material they're uncomfortable having on the site in the first place. The advantage of a fan-run site is that at least it would be us trying to defend our community, so we'd have more of a stake in the fight.

because if the real problem is witchhunts against anyone who might be "endangering children online," IJ and GJ are likely to be just as vulnerable.

That's exactly what I've been worried about too. It's a good thing people are working on new places for us to go.

Thank you for the links!

Yes, I loved it. It's the first episode where I felt like the good guys were in actual jeopardy, you know? And I *loved* that moment where Fiona asked him why he left in the middle of the night. Also it cracked me up that his mom was sleeping with sketchy client guy, and that they snuck out and got caught.

I tried replying to this a while ago and LJ ate my reply. But yeah, I'm totally enjoying the new foil and the pranks Michael is playing on him.

Aw, you hold fandom together!

Thanks, though I think other people probably do that more than me.
