Blood Ties: Heart of Ice

I'm an officer of the law. Canon law. (I think I may need to make that into an icon).

I liked the lighting this week a lot better--the daylight scenes were sort of icy blue rather than that surreal sunlight last week. (I don't know if I even noticed these things prior to Smallville, where the color is all so symbolic). Clearly color matters in this show, too--that opening scene with Vicki and Mike was so warmly shot, and deliberately so. They were setting up the contrast between warm hearts and icy hearts, and using color to do that. I loved that opening scene so much! It really made me buy into Vicki and Mike, which made the end of the episode even more tragic. It was nice to get more of Mike's backstory, too.

I also thought that we're really starting to see some plot complexity. I loved that the Windigo turned out really to be more the B plot than the A plot--yes, it gave Vicki and Henry something to do, but clearly the cannibal monster with the icy heart was just mirroring Mike's perception of Henry as he hunted him. And although Mike is clearly wrong about Henry, I do love that we see exactly why he is still investigating--the unsolved demon case still haunting him, and his increasing concern/suspicion about Henry are of course just fed by the canon lawyer exorcist dude. Maybe if he were less jealous/wigged out by Henry he'd recognize he was being played--but I certainly understand his concern for Vicki. That conversation where she revealed she hadn't even asked Henry about killing people, and her "blind faith" in him, are good reasons to be wary. And I do love that he went for a reality check from his cop colleague. If he really thinks Henry is a serial killer, then his actions are quite understandable.

Meanwhile, the Vicki/Henry relationship is also doing the one-step-forward, two-steps-back thing. She's getting to be very good at manipulating him to help her, but I think I was actually happy at how angry he got at her after Mike's interrogation, because I think he was right: she was using Mike to do her dirty work, even if part of that was unintentional. I assume that once they rescue Henry next week she'll probably be back to trusting Henry a little more than Mike, in the future?

Now for more shallow observations:

Was it just me, or did that Windigo look very wraith-ish? And I don't even watch that show.

OMG, Mike was hot like a hot thing tonight. I can't decide if he looked better in the opening scene, or when he was destroying that windigo with the silver bullets. Oh, hell, it was firing the gun, I'll admit it. I don't have the gun fetish Coreen obviously has, but I love it whenever he overcomes his skepticism, and I like seeing him in action.

And speaking of hot like a hot thing: Henry was really on tonight too. Especially right before he took on the wendigo the first time.

And cliffhanger! With Henry all vamping out! And having to drink Mike's blood! Oh, slashy heaven. I can't wait for next week's episode.

Only in the physical sense. I am *so* tired, I can't even tell you.
(Slept through my alarm this morning, and I'm *very* tempted not to go to work today, but I really need to).

Yes, it looks like it's going to be slashy heaven. And also just Henry-centered heaven. It'll be really nice to have him be the A plot.

Oh, I'm really glad to hear you say that, because I've seen a lot of Mike-bashing in reviews already. The early fandom preference seems to be for Henry, which is certainly understandable, but I'm actually liking Mike more and more as the show goes on.

Ooooh, good point re: the use of color. I so seldom notice that stuff consciously, but it makes so much difference.

Was it just me, or did that Windigo look very wraith-ish?

Not just you. Possibly just you and me, but not just you. :-)

Maybe they share a make-up artist with SGA? Though if they're actually filming in Toronto, probably not. :-)

Nope, they're in Vancouver. (Which weirds me out. They're being very smart with sleight-of-establishing-shot.) So it could very well be.

The Sunday night supernatural head-to-head features Vancouver as Toronto and Toronto as Chicago. Gotta love this industry. :-D
