SPN recs

I suppose the one good thing about heat-related insomnia is that I'm slowly catching up on bigbang stories. And I liked more of them than normal this week, though that might be the sleep deprivation!

Worlds More Full of Weeping (Gen, Sam-centric) by odysseaia Please disregard the emo title, because this is seriously one of the best weechester stories I've ever read. Sam, who is 12, gets left behind when Dean and John go off on what is supposed to be a short hunt, but when they don't return he has to rescue them. This is one of those epic journey stories, filled with marvellous original characters (some invented and some taken from mythology), and it connected in many subtle ways with what we know of Sam's future. And I just love this Sam to death: I want to take him home and squish him and protect him from all the dangers to come.

Storm Bait: The Reckoning Begins (Jared/Jensen) by ficscapeA really terrific AU, with fantastic worldbuilding and a really compelling Jared/Jensen relationship. Jared is a Weaver, a type of being with superhuman abilities, including the ability to create slaves ("Revenants") by reanimating dead people. Revenants generally die or go crazy when their masters die, but there is a rumor that one special Revenant, Jensen, survived and is killing Weavers. Jared is charged by his father to track down that Revenant, but discovers there's a lot more going on than he's aware of. The author warns that the story ending isn't "neatly wrapped in a bow," and it's true that some of the bigger plot elements aren't wrapped up, but the personal storylines are, for the most part, so I didn't find the ending unsatisfying.

Bleed Out and Take Him In (Sam/Dean) by taelynhawker. This is an old school SPN story in a couple of ways: it's a spinoff of season 2 where Sam and Dean try to avert the crisis of Sam's powers through ritual blood magic; and it's also a first-time Wincest story in which the author actually takes seriously the fact that they are brothers as an obstacle to the relationship. Very well-written, and incorporating some season 5 canon in interesting ways.

On the Long and Weary Road (Jensen/various guys, most seriously Christian Kane and JDM) by pigeongirl99.If it weren't for all the sex, I would actually call this a gen fic, because it's definitely not about romance or pairings, it's about Jensen's journey of self-discovery and his love affair with music. It's just that to get to the music, he has a LOT of sex along the way. This description doesn't do this fic justice, because it's lovely and lyrical with a really great sense of place; you really feel the textures and colors and sights and sounds of all the places Jensen travels throughout America in the Prohibition era.

Ours is a reciprocal gravitational orbit (Jared/Jensen).First of all, ignore all the other pairings; they are incidental to the plot and they almost turned me off the story, and I'll read practically any pairing. This story is all about Jared and Jensen: how they meet when Jared is 8 and Jensen is ten, and conduct a passionate friendship--and then relationship--through their teen years and into college, with just one problem: Jensen is imaginary. But that doesn't stop the relationship from being extraordinary, and as you may guess since you've read genre fiction before, there is a twist.

Disaster (This is a Good One) (Jared/Jensen) by aisalynn. Ok, I have to admit that based on the summary, I expected to hate this story. (Basically: When Jared gets dumped right before the holidays when he's supposed to bring his boyfriend home, Chad talks him into kidnapping Jensen and coercing him to meet his whole extended family and pretend to be his boyfriend. Possibly based on a movie? It sure sounds like that kind of thing). And at the beginning of the story, I didn't want Jared and Jensen to hook up, I wanted Jared to GO TO PRISON. But like Jensen, I was gradually won over. This is certainly the sweetest kidnapping fic I've ever read.

There's an odd assortment! :)

I read the Taelynhawker story and liked it a lot, I agree about the old school feel and hope for more fics like that as the series winds down.

As for On The Long and Weary Road, I wanted to like that one a lot more than I did. I didn't feel as caught up as I'd hoped to be. If that makes sense. You know I *love* AUs, especially set in that time period, so maybe my expectations were a little too much. Still, it was lovely writing and the New Orleans section was outstanding. Her original characters in that bit were excellent!

I think it helps me that I have been reading the spnpermanon "recs" (which are very often not recs), and they hated "On the Long and Weary Road," so I went in with low expectations. Plus it is so unusual to read a story with so much sex that *isn't* all about the pairings, so I was intrigued. (Of course, if I had gone in with different expectations, I might have been pissed).

You're welcome! And ah, well, I complain about the heat every summer but I continue to live somewhere where it's regularly above 100, so it's my own fault. :D

Thank you for the recommendation! :D I'm thrilled you liked my story well enough to rec it, and I love your summary. *hugs* Thanks so much.

I like your recs, too, btw. Will use them to sort through my to-read list and pick out which ones to read first.
