Smallville: Savior

Ok, having watched the premiere I can actually get down with this "9 reasons I'm still watching Smallville" meme. Sort of combined with my reactions to "Savior," so spoilers behind the cut.

1. EMIL HAMILTON!! Emil Hamilton, Emil Hamilton, Emil Hamilton. Please please please tell me he's going to be a regular and not killed off like every other scientist on SV, because I am totally in love with him. And kind of want him to be a love interest for Chloe. In fact, I want him to time travel and be a love interest for Chloe 2 years ago.

2. BRIAN AUSTIN GREEN!! I do remember reading he'd be in some episodes this season, but I didn't realize it would be so soon. (And I have to echo serrico--if you had told me two years ago he would be a reason to watch a show, I would have laughed my ass off. I blame it all on SCC). And I like his chemistry with Lois a lot. I am kind of unspoiled for his plotline except for the scenes from next week, so if he really is turning in to an evil villain immediately and getting killed off, don't tell me please.

3. Ollie's chest! I'm so glad to see it still has a prominent place in the credits, not to mention the show itself. And (slightly) more seriously, if they're going to keep him in self-hatred mode, it might actually be kind of interesting to watch. Especially if it means keeping him half-naked at the time.

4.TESS! Are we 100% sure she's not Lex's female clone? Because she gets the great Luthorian plots but they actually let her be competent in their execution. I totally adored Tess being tough and badass under torture, and it all turning out to have been her MASTER PLAN. And ok, so they erased the video footage, but who cares, because DAMN. She totally risked her life to get intel--I'm extremely impressed.

5. PRETTY AMAZING PLOT. Wow, I was blown away by the Zod plot. It was an awesome twist to have his first appearance not as a godlike being but in fact in the midst of a mutiny, and to be able to turn it around with the sheer power of his charisma. Way to show not tell, SV writers. Keep this up and I may have to recant things I said about incoherent plotting last season.

6. And in "pretty amazing plot, continued"--I'm really really curious about Lois' vision of the future (I was out of videotape so I didn't tape this, plus the digital feed kept going all wonky, anyway, so I really hope someone capped all of it), and I'm especially curious about Kryptonian ninja woman. I thought her fight with Clark was AWESOME, and since she's still alive in Zod's army, I can't wait to see where this all goes.

7. CLARK! How is it I always forget exactly how pretty he is, especially when he is staring at Lois with googly eyes? I'm kind of loving the new look. I'm less sold on his storyline--more on that below--but at least in his wallowing in guilt, unlike Ollie and the rest of the gang he's still watching out for the city.

8. LOIS!! Ok, I wish she would sit for five minutes and let Chloe bring her up to speed on recent events (Does she even know Jimmy is dead?), but otherwise I loved every minute of her screentime, whether she was trying to connect with RBB, investigating the accident, or bonding with Ollie. Wow, that scene where she tells him he's really a hero, and he blows it off as something he did for a while, and her response is that he knows himself best, and she has a new hero anyway? DAYUM. That's one way to motivate him out of his self-absorption. I also really loved that she has complete faith that Clark will be returning.

9. CLOIS! Much as Clark's whole "rejecting humanity" plotline is driving me batty, I can put up with it if it means Lois is the one person who keeps him human, because YES. Call me sentimental, but I completely love that trope.

And a couple things I really disliked

A. I am pretty annoyed at Clark's whole "I must deny my humanity to be a hero" storyline, and the way Jor-El is enabling it. It makes character sense based on his (unjustified) self-blame over Jimmy's death, and I'm sure he won't stay there forever, but that's still not going to get me to like it. I will repeat, though, that I'm very happy he's not letting his Kryptonian training get in the way of being a hero.

B. Ok, I spent at least half of last season not even commenting on Chloe's plotline for the most part, because I will always love Chloe no matter how much they butcher her character. But I do want her to accept responsibility for the role she played in Jimmy's death, and wow, today's ep was definitely one step forward, ten steps back. I can see her asking Clark to change the past--who wouldn't ask that, really? In fact, at first that scene made me happy, because earlier in the episode she was acting like Jimmy didn't even exist, and at least I can read that scene as simultaneously showing (a) her grief and (b) her own guilt for the role she played in his death--even her overreaction to Clark's refusal could be read that way--but I still think what she said to Clark was pretty unforgiveable. The most generous reading is that she's projecting her guilt on him, but it still makes me very unhappy with her. :-(

Totally agree with your Emil thoughts. We need more of that guy in this show.

The Zod stuff (aside from Blue's performance) left me a little meh-feeling, but then you point out something like this: but in fact in the midst of a mutiny, and to be able to turn it around with the sheer power of his charisma and I think wow.. that is awesome. Stuff like that is the best part of reading other people's reviews. ;)

A. I am pretty annoyed at Clark's whole "I must deny my humanity to be a hero" storyline, and the way Jor-El is enabling it.

I'm kind of hopeful that CLARK will be the one to prove Jor-El wrong and find his own answer, which will involve embracing both sides.

I will always love Chloe no matter how much they butcher her character.
So you probably get my Lana love then. ;)

The most generous reading is that she's projecting her guilt on him, but it still makes me very unhappy with her.
My comments on Chloe were pretty harsh. I have a lot of issues with her character. The lashing out at Clark did surprise me though. I thought they'd basically set her up in her Watchtower role and have her be the central support system for all the heroes. Maybe they still will though.

Within the first few seconds of Brian Austin Green's appearance, I was kind of hooked. He and Lois were very cute together - it kind of reeks of the whole "anti-chemistry" thing. Loved when he kissed her and she very calmly stomped the hell out of his foot. Hee!

I agree that Chloe's comment to Clark was unforgivable. Do I blame her for making the request? Not at all. Who wouldn't do the same? But even seeing how pained he was to have to say no, she still reacted in a pretty ugly manner.

I've had (and am having) many, MANY issues with Chloe, but I think I would feel at least slightly better towards her if I really felt like she WAS taking responsibility for Jimmy's death. Of course she didn't MEAN for it to happen.....but a big part of why Jimmy was killed was because of the game - intentional or not - she was playing with Davis. I'd like to see her struggle with that more, both with Jimmy's death and the fact that, hey, maybe Davis might have been redeemable....if he hadn't put all his faith and hope in someone who betrayed him.

Clark and Lois - squee! Lots and lots of squee....especially at how happy he was while talking to her on the phone. He was more relaxed right then than at any other point in the episode.

I'm not quite sure if you were replying to me or serenography, but I'll respond anyway. Yeah, I loved Lois' scene with BAG--it definitely made me laugh. But the Clois stuff was awesome.

I haven't been happy with the direction they've been taking Chloe's character in for a while now, and I have to say that's the part of this season that's giving me the most anxiety (and is most likely to make me stop watching the show).

I am suddenly having major issues commenting in the right spot or like a normal person....not that there is anything wrong Miss Serenography, of course :) but yes, the reply was meant for you. Ah, well...chalk it up to me being an idiot.

I agree with you on Chloe....if I were to stop watching right now, it would be because of how they're writing her. Which is kind of a shame, since when I started watching this show, I was all about Chloe. But now....oh, man.

Several people commented that they were confused by the Zod plot, but I kind of love that we got thrown in in medias res , because that's a writing trick SV very rarely uses, because it presumes the audience is smart, and I've never got the impression that's what SV writers think of their audiences. To me it's a sign they're stepping things up a notch.

I really hope that Clark does learn for himself--and show Jor-El--that his humanity is an asset, not a flaw.

I haven't read a lot of spoilers this season, but I did see one about how Chloe and Clark were going to be at odds this season, so maybe this is setting it up? I don't know. The conflict does not do good things for Chloe's character, that's for sure.

ITA about Emil and Tess. Both were awesome, and I was particularly impressed with Tess. Those are some hardvore tactics there, but she really pulled it off. And CF is so, so good.

Tess has become one of my absolute favorite characters, and stuff like that is part of the reason why.

Emil Hamilton, Emil Hamilton, Emil Hamilton.

I loved him. Please let him stay. It helps that he's canon, right?

Ollie's chest! I'm so glad to see it still has a prominent place in the credits, not to mention the show itself. And (slightly) more seriously, if they're going to keep him in self-hatred mode, it might actually be kind of interesting to watch.

Yes, to both these things. I like self-loathing Oliver more than self-righteous Oliver, and I can also see how those two halves fit together.

TESS! Are we 100% sure she's not Lex's female clone? Because she gets the great Luthorian plots but they actually let her be competent in their execution.

Tess was fabulous in this episode. And I loved the dynamic between her and Zod.

I was blown away by the Zod plot. It was an awesome twist to have his first appearance not as a godlike being but in fact in the midst of a mutiny, and to be able to turn it around with the sheer power of his charisma. Way to show not tell, SV writers. Keep this up and I may have to recant things I said about incoherent plotting last season.

I have (probably insanely) high hopes for the plotting this season. If I'm bound for disappointment, I won't be surprised, but boy, have they started out on a strong footing.

I'm especially curious about Kryptonian ninja woman. I thought her fight with Clark was AWESOME

Wow, that scene where she tells him he's really a hero, and he blows it off as something he did for a while, and her response is that he knows himself best, and she has a new hero anyway? DAYUM.

I loved that scene. He was looking for pets, and wasn't getting them.

I am pretty annoyed at Clark's whole "I must deny my humanity to be a hero" storyline, and the way Jor-El is enabling it.

I have no trouble with Jor-El enabling it, since he's been urging this for ages. He's probably eating this up with a spoon. :-)

One would hope so, but Jimmy was canon too. (And they've already killed off one Dr. Hamilton).

I like self-loathing Oliver more than self-righteous Oliver, and I can also see how those two halves fit together.

Yeah, me too. And actually, I kind of like the idea that Oliver's own self-concept may be that the hero thing was something he did for a while when he was bored, because it could really open up some interesting avenues to explore about what drives people to be heroes and what makes them truly heroic.

I agree with your hopefulness about this season's plot arc. My only concern is that with the move to Fridays, the ratings will probably tumble, and if they don't know for sure whether or not they're coming back for season 10, we may experience the same midseason disappointment we always do.

The Jor-El thing is interesting. The official description for the ep said Jor-El would tell Clark to cut ties with Lois, but that's really not what happened. Jor-El said he needed to DEAL with his distraction, Clark ASSUMED that meant say goodbye to Lois.

I think, though, at the end, he made a much wiser decision. He's 'dealing with distraction' by keeping her in his life. Missing her, wondering about her, that's what would be the distraction.

I have some hopes that Jor-El and Clark will be much more of a give and take this year, with Clark learning and making his own choices - ultimately that he has to embrace both sides of himself in order to be the hero he wants and can be.

Well, I don't know, earlier dialogue by Jor-El seemed to indicate that any ties to humanity would hold Clark back. But it would be nice if Jor-El turned out to be more reasonable.

I'm curious as to what Chloe's arc will be, too. I'm really hoping it's not something I hate. Maybe she will be working mainly with Ollie?

I know we differ slightly on the dislikes (I natch love Clark in training), but there was much to squee over!! YES!! More than I expected, TBH. And PLOT! Who knew there'd be plot?!

I'm not at all surprised you love Clark in training with JorEl! And yeah, it's kind of remarkable that they have plot--and not only that, but an endgame for the season.

1. Agreed. I LOVE HIM. He has this calm strength about him, and he's witty and fun, and I just hope he stays on for as long as possible.

2. BAG owes SO MUCH to T:SCC and Derek Reese. He's such a hot item right now. And I loved his take on John Corben. That dry, sarcastic humour that is so much like Lois's own sense of humour that they clash right away ... I love it. I'm looking forward to seeing him soon, and I really really hope he doesn't die too.

5. Okay, I was too confused by the Zod plot to really appreciate it, but your explanation helps me see the good in it. And I guess it stems from 8 years of watching SV and having it talk down to me, that now when it's finally assuming I'm an intelligent viewer, I'm not living up to expectations. ;)

I did laugh, however, at the fact that the minute after we got our very first "Kneel before Zod", he promptly got the lights knocked out of him. :P

6. I thought the future!dream was a great way of setting up the rest of the season. And from what I remember, there was Clois sex, Tess kneeling before Zod (and him putting one of those chains with the dogtag on her), running!Chloe and then dead!Chloe, Ollie digging a hole (WTF?) and bloody hands. But it was all pretty creepy and awesome.

A. I don't much like it either, but I'm assuming it's just going to be a phase and that he'll learn his lesson soon. Already he's learning that he can't break away from humanity/emotions completely, no matter how hard he tries.

B. ITA. I love Chloe, and I will never not love her, but I don't like what's going on with her right now. I mean, I can understand it from a storytelling point of view, but as a character, she's slowly losing my respect. I hope something happens that changes that, and soon.

Thanks for the summary of Lois' memory!

1. Agreed. I LOVE HIM. He has this calm strength about him, and he's witty and fun, and I just hope he stays on for as long as possible.

I'm so impressed with him it took someone else to point out to me he was Gaeta on BSG, and I watched 3 seasons of that show! But Emil is such a different character to me (and I find him seriously hot in ways I just didn't with Gaeta.)

Seriously! He was awesome.

I liked the little glimmers of humor in the Zod plot too.

ITA with what you say here. Well, I wouldn't say I really disliked Clark denying his humanity as a TEMPORARY step on his journey - one which Jor-El has wanted him to take since Exodus. What I'm hoping for is that Clark will realize that it's the fusion of his Kryptonian and human heritage that make him stronger.

Oh, I'm quite certain the goal of the whole plotline is that Clark needs both his human and Kryptonian sides--it's just I'm going to be a little frustrated until they actually get there, because Clark's humanity is my favorite thing about him.

Oh, I agree, and I want him to be happy. It's really noticeable when going through the screencaps on writgurlscaps - the closest Clark comes to a smile is the look of amazement when he sees Lois on the train and later when he's on the phone with her - and neither of those is even close to true happiness but more like a release of tension. Oh, and there's also a micro smile for about one frame when he's talking to Chloe in their first scene. Poor boy, trying to do it Jor-El's way is going to burn him out like nobody's business.
