Fall TV

My TV watching, as always, is somewhat hindered by my second job, which is mostly a night job. Oh well, I guess that spares me from complete TV addiction. So I'm not going to do this night-by-night; Thursday TV is the only TV I watch live anyway.

Shows that I cannot live without and will always watch every week:

Supernatural

Smallville

Terminator: The Sarah Connor chronicles. (I got really addicted to this show during the summer, when they rebroadcast it in its entirety, and have to thank everyone who recced it to me, because it kicks almighty ass.)

Edited to add: And Battlestar Galactica, of course, when it returns.

Shows I will most likely be watching every week unless I get too annoyed by contrived plot twists:

Heroes

Gray's Anatomy (which makes my Thursday night WAY too packed, dammit. In fact, I am generally taping SPN and watching Gray's while writing my Smallville reviews, which sort of explains the decline in the analytical quality of the reviews last season. :P Just in case you were wondering).

Shows I will watch whenever I can but I don't know if I'm going to have time, and one can only tape so many shows before the backlog becomes overwhelming, dammit!

Bones

Pushing Daisies

New shows I am going to try though I'm going to have to really love them to stay with them, given the whole time-crunch thing :

The Mentalist (what can I say? The ad is kind of cool, I'm intrigued)

90210 (I never watched the original show--blasphemy, I know--but I'm a wee bit curious, so I'll at least watch the premiere. And apparently the fate of the whole CW rests on this show, or something?)

Dollhouse (I'm so glad this is a mid-season replacement; hopefully by that time I'll have ditched one of the above shows and have more watching time!)

So what are you watching? And what new shows are you excited about that I should be watching?

I'll be watching Supernatural, Heroes, and Dollhouse. Also, I'm going to try catching Sanctuary on Sci Fi on Fridays because it looks intersting and Gossip Girl, because I'm certifiably insane.

I don't know with what kind of regularity, although I work two jobs (teaching three classes and writing center), so I get pretty beat, and sometimes you just need to sit on your ass and veg.

I don't get scifi on my cable, so that's one less show to tempt me, though it sounds interesting.

The Mentalist (what can I say? The ad is kind of cool, I'm intrigued)

Every time I see a commercial for it all I can think is that they just sucked all the funny out of Psych and put it on a different network.

Oh, but Psych is a completely different show. I mean, the pseudo-psychic stuff isn't even why I watch Psych, it's all about Shawn and Gus, and Shawn and his dad, and Shawn and Lassiter. I'm kind of intrigued about a fake psychic who's actually serious about it.

And why on earth don't I have a Psych icon? *Iz lame*

You're watching what I'm watching! Though to tell the truth, the only show that has me sitting in front of the TV set and whining like a mad thing is SpN. I can hardly stand the wait.

Oh, I KNOW!!! I have an obligatory work thing the night of Sept 18 which I am completely going to "be sick" for, because there's no way I'm missing watching the premiere live!

I totally love that icon, btw. I need more Sam icons.

I will definitely be watching Life, that's the number one can't live without show. And then the following: Sarah Connor Chronicles, Bones, Smallville and the new shows I'll be watching is The Mentalist, Leverage and Dollhouse.

I've never watched Life, but if it's on Fridays I might actually be able to check it out. And I don't think I've heard of Leverage?

Aug. 29th, 2008 01:30 am (UTC)
Yep, it's on Fridays but the premiere schedule is a bit confusing -- it will premiere on Sept 29 after Heroes then air another new episode on Friday (Oct. 3), the next Monday (Oct. 6) before starting its regular Friday schedule on October 10.

Also, if you're interested in watching the first season (which is just 11 episodes) its up on Hulu. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the original music which really adds a *lot* to the show. It's already good with the storyline and the characters but together with the music it's fantastic.

Um, and if you're not adverse to obtaining it through other means just tell me. *shifty eyes*

Leverage will air in TNT, its basically a cross between Ocean's 11 and UK's Hustle. It's a fun caper show about a former insurance investigator (Timothy Hutton) and together with thieves, grifters and a con woman who provide 'leverage' to people who were abused by people in power.

I'll probably watch the old eps on Hulu some time--but do you think that's necessary before the new season starts, or can I just jump right in?

They said that the premiere will act as a 'second' pilot but I think you should check out the first season since there's some plot points tackled in s1 that you probably need to see before heading for second season. If I were asked, episodes necessary for you to watch would be the pilot (it starts a little shaky as all pilots are but with glimmers of the magnificent characterizations just underneath), third episode (beginning of the solidification of the partnership), 4th episode for the plot point in the conspiracy and the funny guest star but skippable since the previouslies can handle the plot point, 5th episode necessary for plot point *and* characterization. This is also the ep where they realize what they're fantastic with: quirky imagery, music and characters and the push-pull dynamic of the partnership. Episodes 6 to 11 are all necessary for the plot and characterization.

Honestly though, it'll all just go by fast because the episodes are fast paced, although, the crime of the week might leave you a little 'Huh?' at times because Life isn't really a cop show. It's a show about two broken people recovering from their past and not letting their tragedies define them. It has dramatic moments but it doesn't take itself seriously. Oh, and if The Mentalist interests you, Life has the same quirky, complex lead in Charlie Crews (Damian Lewis).

Also, if you're an X-Files fan the partnership will remind you of Scully and Mulder.

Erm. Sorry if I went overboard there, Life's such a small fandom that I get over excited when I encounter any interest.:)

I'm watching a ton of shows but the only ones I'm watching live (or trying to watch live if I have classes) are The Office, Pushing Daisies, House, Ugly Betty and How I Met Your Mother.

I will just say keep watching Pushing Daisies!! It's pure love. There's not a lot of new shows and I can't rec them til I see the pilots but I'm interested in seeing Crusoe and My Own Worst Enemy.

Well, I *hope* to be able to watch Pushing Daisies, but I have a work meeting that night every week, so we'll just have to see.

I don't think I've heard of either of those new shows; what are they about?

Knight Rider, baby! And probably House and Criminal Intent. I'd watch others if my monitor wasn't so messed up (if I try to watch Supernatural I can't see a thing...)

This is sort of embarrassing to admit, but I find House too stressful to watch. (This is why I generally stick to scifi; reality-based tv often is *too* real for me. Grey's is an exception only because it's so damn soapy that it doesn't ping my reality radar.)

I didn't see the Knight Rider miniseries when it aired last spring--I take it it was good?

As a British person, I had to take an oath to watch everything that Hugh Laurie is ever in. He's a national treasure.

It was a 90-minute movie / pilot episode. Um, yeah, it was entertaining. And had plotholes you could drive a truck through, but the series looks like it's going to be fun. Or it could be that I'll just watch anything with Bruce Davison in it. I am shallow.

I'm with you on Smallville & Heroes. :D

There's a new NBC show I just caught a few weeks ago, Life. Got me hooked right away.

Smallville, Heroes, and eventually when it finally airs next spring, Battlestar Galactica. I have simple television wants.

I am generally taping SPN and watching Gray's while writing my Smallville reviews
Dang, you're good at multi-tasking! I love your reviews! They are always insightful. I really appreciate how show-positive you are.

Thanks! Though I can tell, myself, that the reviews are better when my brain is more focused. If only I didn't have these pesky life commitments pulling me away from my important TV analysis time!

Oh, and I'll definitely be watching BSG when it returns. I should probably edit to add that up there--I just forgot because it's not back until spring.

While I'm stopping by older posts of yours...

Terminator: The Sarah Connor chronicles. (I got really addicted to this show during the summer, when they rebroadcast it in its entirety, and have to thank everyone who recced it to me, because it kicks almighty ass.)
YAY! I'm so happy you are on board with this one. I am sitting at my desk at work tapping my feet impatiently, as I have the Season 2 opener ready to watch at home. Can't wait!

Like you, I'll be watching Smallville and BSG every week. But I'll also be watching Gossip Girl, Dexter and Friday Night Lights. Oh! And 30 Rock.

Show that may fall off the weekly-watch list under pressure from too many other shows: Pushing Daisies (*sniff* I love it but it has no suspense!), Mad Men (kinda still hate it but vaguely addicted to it... like bad-flavoured lip gloss)

Shows that I'll back-watch at some stage: Heroes, House (is there more House coming?), Ugly Betty

New shows to try: Dollhouse and anything else that gets enough reliable people on my f'list buzzing. (What is this 'Mentalist'?)

I am generally taping SPN and watching Gray's while writing my Smallville reviews, which sort of explains the decline in the analytical quality of the reviews last season. :P
Heee. And there was me thinking it was just a lame season. ;p

I won't be able to watch Dexter live, but a friend has the first couple seasons on DVD and will be lending it to me soon.

Like you, I am a little sad that Pushing Daisies isn't higher on my list. It's so lovely and quirky and endearing--but it doesn't *make me* watch every week, so it's likely to fall by the wayside when things get too busy.

I'm pretty sure House is premiering very soon, though I'm very far behind on it and unlikely to catch up.

Mentalist is a crime show featuring a fake psychic (he used to have a TV show) whose attention to detail is what fools people into thinking he's psychic but helps him solve crimes. Someone described it as "non-funny Psych," which may be true, but the ads are intriguing, so I'll probably at least watch the first episode.

Oh, and once you watch Terminator, you can take my poll! Which is substituting for actual analysis, but you can pretty much tell what I thought from the poll, I think.

AWESOME! This excites me. I am still surprised that I like the show so much--it is not very 'me' in that I am squicked by serial killers and don't like cop shows, but it's really very good and goes from strength to strength.

it doesn't *make me* watch every week
This is the problem! I know I will be happy when I do watch it, but with so much other tv that I will be not only watching but posting about, I doubt I'll be able to keep up with it.
